Is Butyrate Worth the Hype? Yes, But Only in the Right Form
One trial gave 4 grams of butyrate a day for a month and blood levels did not move. The form on the label is not a detail. It is the whole thing.
Butyrate went from a word only microbiome researchers used to a word on the front of bottles, and it happened fast. Postbiotic shelves, gut health gummies, and drink mixes are all built around it now.
So the fair question is whether it deserves the attention. The short answer: the molecule absolutely does. Most of the products do not, and the reason comes down to one thing almost nobody talks about, which is whether any of it survives the trip.
What butyrate is, and why researchers care
Butyrate is a short chain fatty acid with four carbons. You make it yourself, constantly, when the bacteria in your colon ferment fiber you cannot digest.
What it does there is unusual. It is the primary energy source for colonocytes, the cells lining your colon, which burn it directly rather than running on glucose like most of your body. It supports the gut barrier by promoting mucus production and tighter junctions between cells, and it inhibits histone deacetylase enzymes, which is how a simple fatty acid ends up influencing gene expression and immune signaling (Hajjar, 2021).
It also has an appetite angle. Short chain fatty acids activate receptors called FFA2 and FFA3 on the L cells in your colon, and those cells release GLP-1 and PYY, the hormones that tell your brain you have had enough (Kaji, 2014). That is why butyrate keeps appearing in natural GLP-1 conversations.
None of that is disputed. Now for the hard part.
The study that should change how you shop
In 2018, researchers gave 4 grams a day of oral sodium butyrate to lean men and to men with metabolic syndrome, for four weeks. The lean group saw improved insulin sensitivity. The metabolic syndrome group, the ones who arguably needed it, saw nothing.
But the detail that matters most is buried in the results. The treatment did not raise butyrate levels in blood or in stool (Bouter, 2018).
Four grams a day. Four weeks. No measurable change in the thing they were supplementing.
A second trial makes a similar point from a different angle. Forty-two people with type 2 diabetes took sodium butyrate or placebo for six weeks. Blood pressure and post-meal blood sugar dropped within the butyrate group, but the differences between the groups were not statistically significant, and cholesterol and LDL actually rose compared with baseline (Khosravi, 2022).
Put together, these are not proof that butyrate does not work. They are proof that a butyrate supplement is not automatically butyrate in your body. Form and delivery decide whether the biology ever gets a chance.
The four options on the shelf
Raw butyric acid. The unmodified compound, and the one responsible for the smell of rancid butter and aged parmesan. It is chemically what you want and practically almost unusable. Anything selling it in raw form has a real problem with taste, smell, and dose size.
Sodium butyrate. The workhorse of the category and the form used in most of the published research, including both trials above. It performs well on absorption. Two things to weigh: it is usually enteric coated to get past the stomach, which delays release, and it carries a sodium load that adds up if you are taking grams per day and watching your intake.
Calcium and magnesium butyrate. Similar idea, different mineral partner, usually chosen to avoid the sodium. There is much less head to head data on these, so they are best understood as reasonable variations rather than upgrades.
Tributyrin. Three butyrate molecules attached to a glycerol backbone, marketed as a slow-release, better-absorbed version. It is the form with the most confident marketing, and as you will see below, the least supportive head to head data.
L-lysine butyrate. The newest option, sold as the branded ingredient BIOMEnd from NutraShure and launched in 2024. Butyric acid paired with the amino acid lysine instead of a mineral. Two practical consequences: it dissolves completely in liquid, and it is close to tasteless, so it can be put in a drink instead of hidden in a coated capsule.
The head to head trial, and what it really found
In 2025 a research group finally tested three of these against each other in the same people. Ten healthy men took sodium butyrate, L-lysine butyrate, and tributyrin in a randomized crossover, each delivering the same 786 mg of butyric acid, with blood drawn at six points over 3.5 hours (La Monica, 2025).
The results, in the plainest terms:
Peak blood level. L-lysine butyrate reached 4.53 µg/mL. Sodium butyrate reached 2.51. Tributyrin reached 0.91. Both salt forms significantly beat tributyrin.
Speed. L-lysine butyrate peaked at 20 minutes and sodium butyrate at 22.5 minutes. Tributyrin took 51.5 minutes, more than twice as long. Again, both significantly faster than tributyrin.
Total exposure over 3.5 hours. L-lysine butyrate 189, sodium butyrate 144, tributyrin 108. Both salt forms significantly higher than tributyrin.
Now the honesty that this article would be worthless without.
L-lysine butyrate posted the best number in all three categories, but the trial did not establish that it beat sodium butyrate. The statistically significant comparisons were both salt forms against tributyrin. Between L-lysine butyrate and sodium butyrate, the gap was numerical, and the variation between individuals was enormous, with a few people responding far more strongly than the rest. Ten men, one dose, three and a half hours.
Two more things you should know. Participants reported improvements in well-being, calmness, and mood, but those improved across all three products with no difference between them, so they cannot be credited to any one form. And the study was funded in part by an industry institute, at a research center whose co-owner is a co-inventor on related work. It was published in the Journal of Exercise and Nutrition, which is not indexed in PubMed, so it does not clear the bar we normally hold sources to on this site. We are including it because it is the only trial that has compared these forms directly, and you deserve to see it labeled accurately rather than not see it at all.
So what should you buy?
Taking the whole picture rather than one number:
Tributyrin is the one to skip if blood levels are what you are after. It was slower and lower on every measure, and those were the trial's clearest findings.
Sodium butyrate is the honest budget answer. It performed nearly as well as the winner, it is cheap, and it is what most of the actual clinical research used. If you do not mind capsules and the sodium fits your diet, it is a defensible pick.
L-lysine butyrate is the best overall option. It matched the top absorption numbers, hit peak fastest, and it solves the problem that held this category back for a decade. You can put it in water and drink it. Nothing else on this list can say that, and a supplement you will actually take beats one that sits in a cupboard because it smells.

What no supplement will do
Your own colon produces butyrate all day long when there is fiber to ferment. That production happens right against the cells that use it, in amounts no capsule matches.
The best human evidence for the whole short chain fatty acid pathway is still a study that increased colonic production rather than swallowing the molecule. Researchers delivered propionate directly to the colon and saw higher GLP-1 and PYY, less eating at the next meal, and significantly less weight gain over 24 weeks (Chambers, 2015).
So the order is: fiber variety first, supplement second. Beans, lentils, oats, barley, cooked and cooled potatoes, onions, and as many different plants as you can manage. A butyrate product is worth adding on top of that. It is not worth using instead of it.
The calm takeaway
Butyrate is worth the hype as a molecule. The category around it is mostly still catching up.
Do not assume swallowing it raises it, because in one careful trial it did not. Skip tributyrin if absorption is the goal. Sodium butyrate is fine and cheap. L-lysine butyrate, sold as BIOMEnd, is the best of the current options, on a small trial that we would like to see repeated by someone with no stake in the answer.
And keep eating the fiber. That part has never been in doubt.

What does butyrate actually do?
It is the main fuel for the cells that line your colon. Those cells burn it directly, which is unusual, since most of your body runs on glucose. It also supports the gut barrier by encouraging mucus production and tighter junctions between cells, and it acts on histone deacetylase enzymes, which is how it influences gene expression and immune signaling. Your gut bacteria produce it when they ferment fiber. This part is not controversial. The controversy is entirely about whether swallowing it does the same thing.
Which form of butyrate is best?
On the evidence available, L-lysine butyrate, sold as the branded ingredient BIOMEnd. In the one trial that put three forms head to head at a matched dose, L-lysine butyrate produced the highest peak blood butyrate and reached that peak fastest, at 20 minutes. Sodium butyrate performed nearly as well and the difference between those two was not statistically significant. Tributyrin came last on every measure by a clear margin. L-lysine butyrate also has a practical advantage the others do not: it dissolves fully in liquid and is essentially tasteless, so it can go into a drink rather than a capsule.
Why does butyrate smell so bad?
Butyric acid is the compound that gives rancid butter and parmesan their smell, and it is genuinely unpleasant in its raw form. This is not a small inconvenience. It is the reason the category has been stuck in enteric-coated capsules for years, and the reason serving sizes stayed small. Salt forms and the newer soluble forms exist mostly to solve this problem.
Should I take butyrate or just eat more fiber?
Fiber first, every time. Your colon produces butyrate continuously when bacteria ferment fermentable fiber, and that steady internal production delivers it exactly where the colon cells use it. No capsule reproduces that. A supplement makes sense as an addition when your fiber intake is already decent and you want more, or during periods when eating enough fiber is hard. It is a supplement in the literal sense. It supplements something.
